Question 1 · Probability

A bag holds 4 red, 4 blue and 3 green balls. One ball is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

  1. A. 1
  2. B. 4/11 ✓
  3. C. 5/11
  4. D. 7/11

Answer: 4/11. Probability = favourable ÷ total = 4/11.

Question 2 · AP sums

Find the sum of the first 18 terms of the AP that starts at 10 with common difference 3.

  1. A. 657
  2. B. 549
  3. C. 1278
  4. D. 639 ✓

Answer: 639. Sum = n/2 × (2a + (n − 1)d) = 18/2 × (20 + 51) = 639.

Question 3 · Mensuration

A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 10 cm. What is its volume? (Use π = 22/7)

  1. A. 440 cm³
  2. B. 1540 cm³ ✓
  3. C. 1694 cm³
  4. D. 220 cm³

Answer: 1540 cm³. Volume = π r² h = 22/7 × 7 × 7 × 10 = 1540 cm³.

Question 4 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 14 cm and 48 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 62 cm
  2. B. 49 cm
  3. C. 51 cm
  4. D. 50 cm ✓

Answer: 50 cm. c² = 14² + 48² = 196 + 2304 = 2500, so c = 50 cm.

Question 5 · Quadratic equations

What is the larger root of x² − 15x + 54 = 0?

  1. A. 9 ✓
  2. B. 6
  3. C. 10
  4. D. 15

Answer: 9. x² − 15x + 54 = (x − 9)(x − 6) = 0, so the roots are 9 and 6. The larger is 9.
