Questions and answers from this day. Play today's quiz to build your streak.

Question 1 · Linear equations

If x + y = 3 and x − y = 1, what is x?

  1. A. 3
  2. B. 4
  3. C. 2 ✓
  4. D. 1

Answer: 2. Add the two equations: 2x = 3 + 1 = 4, so x = 2.

Question 2 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 3 cm and 4 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 10 cm
  2. B. 5 cm ✓
  3. C. 1 cm
  4. D. 4 cm

Answer: 5 cm. c² = 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25, so c = 5 cm.

Question 3 · Trigonometry

Find the value of sin 90° − cos 60°.

  1. A. 1/2 ✓
  2. B. 2
  3. C. 1
  4. D. 3/2

Answer: 1/2. Use sin 30° = ½, cos 60° = ½, tan 45° = 1, sin 90° = 1 and cos 0° = 1. sin 90° − cos 60° = 1/2.

Question 4 · Probability

A bag holds 4 red, 2 blue and 2 green balls. One ball is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

  1. A. 5/8
  2. B. 1/2 ✓
  3. C. 2
  4. D. 1/4

Answer: 1/2. Probability = favourable ÷ total = 4/8 = 1/2.

Question 5 · Quadratic equations

What is the larger root of x² − 6x + 5 = 0?

  1. A. 4
  2. B. 6
  3. C. 1
  4. D. 5 ✓

Answer: 5. x² − 6x + 5 = (x − 5)(x − 1) = 0, so the roots are 5 and 1. The larger is 5.
