Question 1 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 9 cm and 12 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 21 cm
  2. B. 30 cm
  3. C. 15 cm ✓
  4. D. 16 cm

Answer: 15 cm. c² = 9² + 12² = 81 + 144 = 225, so c = 15 cm.

Question 2 · Probability

A bag holds 2 red, 6 blue and 3 green balls. One ball is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

  1. A. 9/11
  2. B. 2/11 ✓
  3. C. 1/3
  4. D. 1/6

Answer: 2/11. Probability = favourable ÷ total = 2/11.

Question 3 · Coordinate geometry

Find the distance between the points (−5, 2) and (3, 17).

  1. A. 34
  2. B. 17 ✓
  3. C. 16
  4. D. 18

Answer: 17. Distance = √(8² + 15²) = √289 = 17.

Question 4 · Linear equations

If x + y = 8 and x − y = 6, what is x?

  1. A. 6
  2. B. 14
  3. C. 8
  4. D. 7 ✓

Answer: 7. Add the two equations: 2x = 8 + 6 = 14, so x = 7.

Question 5 · AP sums

Find the sum of the first 14 terms of the AP that starts at 6 with common difference 5.

  1. A. 553
  2. B. 497
  3. C. 539 ✓
  4. D. 574

Answer: 539. Sum = n/2 × (2a + (n − 1)d) = 14/2 × (12 + 65) = 539.
