Questions and answers from this day. Play today's quiz to build your streak.

Question 1 · Algebraic identities

If a + b = 9 and ab = 18, what is a² + b²?

  1. A. 47
  2. B. 117
  3. C. 45 ✓
  4. D. 36

Answer: 45. (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b², so a² + b² = 9² − 2 × 18 = 81 − 36 = 45.

Question 2 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 8 cm and 15 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 17 cm ✓
  2. B. 16 cm
  3. C. 7 cm
  4. D. 18 cm

Answer: 17 cm. c² = 8² + 15² = 64 + 225 = 289, so c = 17 cm.

Question 3 · Coordinate geometry

Find the distance between the points (2, 0) and (10, 15).

  1. A. 23
  2. B. 34
  3. C. 17 ✓
  4. D. 18

Answer: 17. Distance = √(8² + 15²) = √289 = 17.

Question 4 · Mensuration

A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 8 cm. What is its volume? (Use π = 22/7)

  1. A. 1239 cm³
  2. B. 352 cm³
  3. C. 1232 cm³ ✓
  4. D. 1386 cm³

Answer: 1232 cm³. Volume = π r² h = 22/7 × 7 × 7 × 8 = 1232 cm³.

Question 5 · Quadratic equations

What is the larger root of x² − 6x + 8 = 0?

  1. A. 2
  2. B. 8
  3. C. 4 ✓
  4. D. 5

Answer: 4. x² − 6x + 8 = (x − 4)(x − 2) = 0, so the roots are 4 and 2. The larger is 4.
