Question 1 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 60 cm and 63 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 87 cm ✓
  2. B. 174 cm
  3. C. 3 cm
  4. D. 88 cm

Answer: 87 cm. c² = 60² + 63² = 3600 + 3969 = 7569, so c = 87 cm.

Question 2 · Coordinate geometry

Find the distance between the points (−4, 4) and (12, 34).

  1. A. 34 ✓
  2. B. 46
  3. C. 33
  4. D. 35

Answer: 34. Distance = √(16² + 30²) = √1156 = 34.

Question 3 · Linear equations

If x + y = 13 and x − y = 9, what is x?

  1. A. 9
  2. B. 13
  3. C. 2
  4. D. 11 ✓

Answer: 11. Add the two equations: 2x = 13 + 9 = 22, so x = 11.

Question 4 · Probability

A bag holds 3 red, 2 blue and 4 green balls. One ball is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

  1. A. 3/2
  2. B. 4/9
  3. C. 1/3 ✓
  4. D. 2/3

Answer: 1/3. Probability = favourable ÷ total = 3/9 = 1/3.

Question 5 · AP sums

Find the sum of the first 18 terms of the AP that starts at 4 with common difference 1.

  1. A. 225 ✓
  2. B. 243
  3. C. 450
  4. D. 189

Answer: 225. Sum = n/2 × (2a + (n − 1)d) = 18/2 × (8 + 17) = 225.
