Question 1 · Mensuration

A cylinder has a radius of 7 cm and a height of 11 cm. What is its volume? (Use π = 22/7)

  1. A. 484 cm³
  2. B. 1694 cm³ ✓
  3. C. 1848 cm³
  4. D. 242 cm³

Answer: 1694 cm³. Volume = π r² h = 22/7 × 7 × 7 × 11 = 1694 cm³.

Question 2 · Trigonometry

Find the value of sin 30° + cos 60°.

  1. A. 1 ✓
  2. B. 5/4
  3. C. 3/2
  4. D. 1/2

Answer: 1. Use sin 30° = ½, cos 60° = ½, tan 45° = 1, sin 90° = 1 and cos 0° = 1. sin 30° + cos 60° = 1.

Question 3 · Probability

A bag holds 2 red, 6 blue and 1 green balls. One ball is picked at random. What is the probability it is red?

  1. A. 1/3
  2. B. 2/3
  3. C. 7/9
  4. D. 2/9 ✓

Answer: 2/9. Probability = favourable ÷ total = 2/9.

Question 4 · Quadratic equations

What is the larger root of x² − 16x + 63 = 0?

  1. A. 9 ✓
  2. B. 10
  3. C. 7
  4. D. 16

Answer: 9. x² − 16x + 63 = (x − 9)(x − 7) = 0, so the roots are 9 and 7. The larger is 9.

Question 5 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 20 cm and 21 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 29 cm ✓
  2. B. 30 cm
  3. C. 58 cm
  4. D. 41 cm

Answer: 29 cm. c² = 20² + 21² = 400 + 441 = 841, so c = 29 cm.
