Questions and answers from this day. Play today's quiz to build your streak.

Question 1 · Algebraic identities

If a + b = 12 and ab = 17, what is a² + b²?

  1. A. 127
  2. B. 178
  3. C. 110 ✓
  4. D. 34

Answer: 110. (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b², so a² + b² = 12² − 2 × 17 = 144 − 34 = 110.

Question 2 · Coordinate geometry

Find the distance between the points (3, 3) and (8, 15).

  1. A. 26
  2. B. 13 ✓
  3. C. 14
  4. D. 17

Answer: 13. Distance = √(5² + 12²) = √169 = 13.

Question 3 · Pythagoras theorem

A right-angled triangle has legs of 60 cm and 63 cm. How long is the hypotenuse?

  1. A. 87 cm ✓
  2. B. 86 cm
  3. C. 88 cm
  4. D. 174 cm

Answer: 87 cm. c² = 60² + 63² = 3600 + 3969 = 7569, so c = 87 cm.

Question 4 · Quadratic equations

What is the larger root of x² − 4x + 3 = 0?

  1. A. 1
  2. B. 3 ✓
  3. C. 2
  4. D. 4

Answer: 3. x² − 4x + 3 = (x − 3)(x − 1) = 0, so the roots are 3 and 1. The larger is 3.

Question 5 · Trigonometry

Find the value of sin 30° + cos 60°.

  1. A. 1 ✓
  2. B. 3/2
  3. C. 5/4
  4. D. 1/2

Answer: 1. Use sin 30° = ½, cos 60° = ½, tan 45° = 1, sin 90° = 1 and cos 0° = 1. sin 30° + cos 60° = 1.
